Animal lovers in Cornwall are celebrating the arrival of the first baby
reindeer to be born in the UK for thousands of years.
The tiny male, born to Rudolph and Prancer at the Trevarno estate near
Helston, has been named Blue in tribute to the bluebells his home is
renowned for.
Blue is part of a small herd imported from Scandinavia, and since his birth
on 1 May, has been joined by another playmate.
Two more calves are expected this month, which will bring the number of
reindeer at the estate to 14.
Staff member Ellie Pearce said: "It was incredibly exciting waiting for the
first birth. I arrived in one morning and there he was looking absolutely
beautiful.
"Since then he's put on a pound a day and he's become incredibly friendly
and inquisitive. He doesn't tend to stray far from his mother as she is very
protective."
The little deer can already outrun Ms Pearce despite standing just over one
foot tall.
Soon visitors will be able to see Blue with his herd at
Trevarno.
