Doggy paddle raises
cash for pet causes
WITH
the London Marathon looming, some of the Island's canine friends, not wanting to
be left out of the action, took part in a dog swimathon organised by The Natural
Therapy Centre for Animals.
Vav Simon
and her team at the centre in Upton Road, Ryde, used their hydrotherapy swimming
pool to swim 22 dogs.
Each
minute a dog swam was equivalent to a mile walked and in total more than ten
marathons were completed.
The
pool was never empty and a cancellation due to a dog having conjunctivitis was
quickly filled by Vav's children providing an emergency four-legged
substitution.
"It was
hard work," said Vav, "but all the dogs have swum here before and knew what to
do."
Most of
the dogs had been to the centre for rehabilitation after surgery and treatment
for arthritis and other illnesses but others were there simply to keep fit or
just to have some fun.
In total,
£750 was raised for Pet Awareness and Island branches of Greyhound Rescue and
Friends of the Animals.
